When to Read
This comprehensive dua can be recited at any time, but it's particularly potent when made after obligatory prayers (Salah), during the times when dua is readily accepted (like the last third of the night, between the Adhan and Iqamah, or during Sujood). Making it a regular part of your supplication, especially when you feel the pull of addiction or a bad habit, can significantly strengthen your resolve and connection to Allah.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of each word. Raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us. Visualize yourself breaking free from the chains of addiction and living a life that pleases Allah. Believe that Allah has the power to grant you this immense blessing and that He loves to be asked. Repeat it consistently, making it a habit in itself that replaces the bad ones you wish to leave behind.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates asking Allah for the foundational elements of a righteous life. * **Guidance (Huda):** This is the ultimate key to navigating life's challenges, including overcoming harmful desires and habits. It's a request for Allah to show you the straight path and keep you firm upon it. * **Piety (Tuqa):** This means developing a conscious awareness of Allah and striving to obey His commands while avoiding what He has forbidden. This spiritual shield is crucial in resisting temptation. * **Chastity ('Afaf):** This refers to purity and self-restraint, not just in matters of illicit relationships but also in avoiding all forms of forbidden actions and speech, including the excesses that lead to addiction. * **Self-Sufficiency (Ghina):** This is a state of contentment and not needing to rely on anything or anyone other than Allah. It encompasses freedom from dependence on harmful substances or behaviors, and instead finding richness in one's relationship with the Creator. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself used to supplicate with these words, indicating their profound importance and comprehensiveness in seeking Allah's favor for a balanced and righteous life.
Source & Authentication
The Hadith mentions that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from the decline of blessings, the change of well-being, the sudden punishment, and whatever He disliked. He also used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' Full text from Sahih Muslim (Book 35, Hadith 6510): 'Umar b. al-Khaṭṭāb reported: Allah's Messenger ﷺ used to supplicate: 'O Allah, guide me, and make me the one who is guided, and make me lead a good life, and make me die in a state of steadfastness, and make me secure on the Day of Judgment, and make my repentance acceptable, and praise be to Allah in the first and the last (as in the case of repentance), and make me content with the decree of Allah.' He also said: 'O Allah, I ask Thee for constancy in my affair, and I ask Thee for a firm resolve to follow the right guidance, and I ask Thee for the thing that proves the truth of Thy blessings, and I ask Thee for a good manner of gratitude towards Thee, and I ask Thee for a good worship. I ask Thee, O my Lord, for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what Thou knowest. And I ask Thee for the good which Thou knowest, and I seek forgiveness from Thee for that which Thou dost know.' (Sahih Muslim 2721). The specific phrase 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina' is a well-established supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ for overall well-being and righteous living.
