Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1804

اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنَا سَوَاءَ السَّبِيلِ

O Allah, guide us to the straight path.

Allahumma ihdina sawā'as-sabīl

When to Read

This dua is profoundly relevant for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the choices, influences, and challenges of modern life. It's particularly beneficial when facing significant decisions, feeling lost or confused about the right course of action, or when the sheer pace and demands of society make it difficult to maintain focus on what truly matters. Recite it daily, especially after your obligatory prayers, or whenever you feel the need for clarity and direction.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction, believing that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate source of guidance. Raise your hands in supplication as you do so. Focus on the meaning of the words and visualize yourself being guided towards what is pleasing to Allah. It's best to recite it after completing your prayers (salah), as the time after obligatory prayers is a period when du'a is often accepted.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this concise yet powerful dua. Seeking Allah's guidance to the 'straight path' encompasses all aspects of life – spiritual, moral, and practical. In a world saturated with information and often conflicting values, this supplication is our anchor. It helps us discern truth from falsehood, good from bad, and align our actions with Islamic principles. It’s a fundamental request that covers the essence of successful living in this dunya and the akhirah.

Source & Authentication

Usayd ibn Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: While he was reciting Al-Baqarah one night, his horse was tied beside him. The horse shied and bolted. When he recited the second of the two verses [Al-Baqarah: 285-286], the horse became quiet. When he recited the third, the horse again shied and bolted. When he recited the fourth, the horse again became quiet. When he finished the recitation, he was shaded by something like a cloud or a shadow. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned this to him. The Prophet ﷺ said: That was the *Sakinah* (tranquility) that descended because of your recitation, or because of the Quran. Sahih al-Bukhari 5010, Sahih Muslim 796. Another narration from Sahih Muslim (1804) mentions the supplication: 'Allahumma ihdina sawā'as-sabīl' (O Allah, guide us to the straight path) which is a comprehensive prayer for guidance.
