Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 3371 (Bukhari), 2708 (Muslim)

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, and every harmful creature, and from every envious eye.

Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm. A'udhu bikalimatillāhit-tāmmat min kulli shaiṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli 'ainin lāmmah.

When to Read

This powerful supplication can be recited at any time, but it's particularly beneficial to say it in the morning and evening. It's also recommended when you feel vulnerable, when encountering someone who might have ill intentions, or when simply seeking general protection for yourself, your family, and your possessions.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and firm belief in Allah's power to protect. It is recommended to place your hand on the part of your body that feels pain or unease while reciting, if applicable. Breathing into your hands and then wiping over yourself is also a practice associated with seeking protection, particularly with Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, which can be recited alongside this dua.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge in Allah's absolute power. 'Allah's perfect words' refers to the Quran or His decree, which no evil can overcome. The mention of 'every devil' and 'every harmful creature' signifies comprehensive protection against unseen evils. The specific mention of 'every envious eye' directly addresses the potent reality of the evil eye (Al-'Ayn), a concept acknowledged in Islamic tradition where envy can cause harm. By reciting this, we acknowledge our reliance on Allah alone for safeguarding us from all forms of malice, visible and invisible.

Narrated by Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain (may Allah be pleased with them) saying: 'O Allah! I seek refuge in Your perfect words from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Your servant 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas used to seek refuge with them by the same words.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371). In another narration: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous thing and from every evil eye.' (Sahih Muslim 2708).
