O Allah! Guide him, for indeed You know, and do not torment him, for indeed I do not know. O Allah! Guide him to the right path.

Allahumma ihdihi li-annaka ta'lamu wa la tu'adhdhibhu wa ana a'lam. Allahumma ihdihi sawa' as-sabeel.

When to Read

This dua is perfect for reciting when you are deeply concerned about a loved one battling addiction. You can make it at any time, especially after prayers (Salat) when your supplications are more likely to be accepted, or during times of distress when your heart is most sincere. It’s a way to channel your concern and love into a powerful plea to Allah for their well-being.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and conviction. Imagine your loved one's name and the struggles they face as you recite it. Picture them finding strength and turning towards Allah. Repeat it consistently, entrusting the outcome to Allah. Remember to also support your loved one with your actions, offering encouragement and seeking appropriate help for them, while this dua forms the spiritual backbone of your efforts.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies the essence of seeking help from the One who truly knows what is best for us and our loved ones. By asking Allah to guide your loved one, you are acknowledging His ultimate power over all affairs and His infinite mercy. It reflects the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ own supplications for people, showing us the importance of praying for others, especially those who are struggling. This act of making dua not only benefits the person you are praying for but also strengthens your own reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and your connection with Him.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'O Allah! Strengthen Islam with Abu Jahl or Umar bin Al-Khattab.' So Umar bin Al-Khattab came out. It was narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'O Allah! Strengthen Islam with Umar bin Al-Khattab.' This hadith, while not directly about addiction, illustrates the Prophet’s ﷺ practice of making specific duas for the guidance of individuals. The dua provided above is a beautiful application of this principle for someone struggling with addiction, adapted from supplications that seek guidance and turning away from misguidance, acknowledging that only Allah knows the hearts and the path to righteousness.
