Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدٰى وَالتُّقٰى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنٰى.

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity/abstinence, and self-sufficiency/wealth.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.

When to Read

Recite this dua regularly, especially when facing financial pressures or temptations that might compromise your integrity. It's a comprehensive plea for internal strength and external provision that can be offered at any time, but is particularly potent during times of testing.

How to Read

Raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible. Begin with 'Bismillah' and praise Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). Recite the dua with sincerity and conviction, believing in Allah's ability to grant what you ask. Conclude by wiping your hands over your face, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a profound request for the essential elements of a balanced life. 'Al-huda' (guidance) keeps us on the straight path, preventing us from straying into forbidden means of acquiring wealth. 'At-tuqa' (piety/consciousness of Allah) acts as a constant reminder to uphold Allah's commands, even when no one is watching. 'Al-'afafa' (chastity/abstinence) encompasses abstaining from seeking what is not rightfully ours or from asking excessively from people. 'Al-ghina' (self-sufficiency/contentment) refers to the inner richness that makes one content with what Allah has provided, whether it be little or much, and also the ability to fulfill one's needs without resorting to unlawful means. By asking for these, we pray for the strength to maintain our integrity, regardless of our financial circumstances.
