Dua for Remaining Humble Amidst Success

Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik

When to Read

This powerful supplication is particularly vital when you feel success creeping in, whether it's in your career, studies, family life, or any area of your life. It's a shield against the arrogance that can accompany blessings. Make it a habit to recite it regularly, especially during your morning and evening remembrance (dhikr), or whenever you feel a sense of pride or self-reliance creeping in. It serves as a constant reminder of where true strength and blessings originate.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Visualize the blessings you have and the potential for them to be taken away if you become ungrateful or arrogant. Understanding the meaning behind each phrase – seeking refuge from the loss of blessings, the reversal of well-being, unexpected punishment, and Allah's anger – enhances its impact. Raise your hands as you would in other supplications, showing humility and earnestness.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the subtle danger of success: arrogance and ingratitude, which can lead to the loss of those very blessings. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge that all success is from Him and can be withdrawn. This practice fosters humility, strengthens our reliance on Allah, and helps preserve the blessings we enjoy. It reminds us that true security lies not in our achievements, but in Allah's continued favor and protection.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all Your displeasure.)
