O Allah, we seek refuge in You from these desires, from the trials of this world, from the punishment of the grave, from the Day of Resurrection, from the evil of this world and the Hereafter, from the evil of what we do, and from the evil of what we do not do, and from the evil of what You have created, and from the evil of what You have not created, and from the evil of what You have created.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua is vital for any Muslim seeking to safeguard themselves and the wider Ummah from internal strife and discord. Recite it during times of heightened tension, when you witness or hear about divisions within the Muslim community, or as a regular supplication during your daily prayers (especially after the Tashahhud, before the Salaam). It's particularly poignant to recite it when you feel personal inclinations pulling you away from unity or when faced with tempting desires that could lead to fragmentation.
How to Read
This dua is best recited with a sincere heart, focusing on the plea for protection and unity. Raise your hands as you would during supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible. Utter the words with conviction, understanding the profound meaning behind seeking refuge in Allah from the very things that can tear us apart. Consider reciting it after your obligatory prayers, and also during times of personal reflection and during the blessed hours, like the last third of the night.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful dua, though seeking broad refuge, directly addresses the root causes of division: personal desires (hawa), worldly temptations (fitnatin-dunya), and the potential for wrongdoing or negligence. By seeking Allah's protection from these, we are simultaneously praying for the preservation of the Ummah's unity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us such comprehensive supplications because the forces that lead to division are manifold. Reciting this ensures we are covered against both outward trials and inward inclinations that can fracture our community.
Source & Authentication
Ibn 'Umar said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would often invoke Allah with these supplications: 'Allahumma inna na'udhu bika min hadhal-hawa, wa min fitnatin-dunya, wa min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min yawmil-qiyamah, wa min sharri dun-ya wal-akhirah, wa min sharri ma na'mal, wa min sharri ma la na'mal, wa min sharri ma khalaq, wa min sharri ma lam yakhluq, wa min sharri ma khalaq.' (Sahih: The last part of the hadith is weak in narration, but the first part is authenticated by other chains.)
