Dua for Protection from Shirk and for Firm Guidance

Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2719

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know. Indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika shai'an wa ana a'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyub.

When to Read

This dua is particularly important to recite regularly, especially in the morning and evening. It's a powerful safeguard against the most hidden form of shirk – associating partners with Allah, even unknowingly. Considering the subtle ways shirk can manifest, making this a part of your daily remembrance (dhikr) is a wise practice for all Muslims seeking sincere Tawhid.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely from the heart, with full conviction in Allah's power to protect you. It is best recited with hands raised slightly, as is the etiquette for many supplications. Focus on the meaning of seeking refuge from the most grievous sin and acknowledging Allah's complete knowledge, which encompasses even our own unawareness.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a profound shield against shirk, the gravest sin in Islam. By seeking refuge in Allah from associating partners with Him, knowingly or unknowingly, we affirm our commitment to pure Tawhid (Oneness of Allah). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua, highlighting its significance in safeguarding our faith and ensuring our worship is solely for Allah. It acknowledges Allah's absolute knowledge of all things, seen and unseen, including our own intentions and potential shortcomings.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The Shaitan comes to one of you and says: 'Who created such and such? Who created such and such?' until he says: 'Who created your Lord?' When he feels that, let him seek refuge in Allah and say: 'A'udhu billahi minash-Shaitanir-rajim (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil).' And it was narrated to me by Yunus and Ibn Abi 'Umar. They said: 'This is specific to the whispers of the Shaitan.' But Muhammad bin Rimh said: 'I said to Yunus: 'And what did he say?' He said: 'He said: 'It was narrated to me by way of this isnad (chain of narration) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika shai'an wa ana a'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyub.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know. Indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.)'
