Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to ask for fundamental aspects of well-being. It's especially relevant when you feel the pull of differing opinions or societal trends that might lead you astray from the straight path. You can make this dua at any time, but particularly after your obligatory prayers, or in the morning and evening.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction, raising your hands as the Prophet ﷺ often did when making supplication. Focus on the meaning of each word: seeking Allah's guidance (al-huda) to know the truth and follow it, piety (at-tuqa) to fear Allah and avoid sin, chastity ('afafa) to be protected from that which is unlawful or shameful, and richness (al-ghina) to be content with what Allah has provided, freeing you from dependence on others or worldly desires that can lead to error.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the essence of seeking Allah's favor for a balanced and righteous life. Guidance protects us from straying in our beliefs and actions, piety keeps us mindful of our Lord, chastity guards our honor and modesty, and contentment prevents us from falling into greed or envy, all of which are crucial in navigating social interactions with integrity and steadfastness. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that this dua is sufficient for a person.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "No servant starts his morning saying: 'O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, the Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur'an, the One Who splits the grain and the seed, the Revealer of the dawn, Who has made the night a tranquility and the sun and moon are calculated by number; so decree my affairs with You, and cling not to the affairs of Your own, except that You will make them right. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of every dominant creature whose forelock is in Your hand. Verily, my Lord is on a straight path.' except that he will be protected..." It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness).
