Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 770

O Allah, Lord of Jibril, Mika'il, and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You judge between Your servants concerning that wherein they differ. Guide me to the truth concerning that wherein there is disagreement, by Your leave. Verily, You guide whom You will to a straight path.

Allahumma Rabba Jibra'eela wa Mika'eela wa Israfeela, Fatiras-samawati wal-ardh, 'Alimal-ghaybi wash-shahadah, Anta tahkumu bayna 'ibadika feema kanu feehi yakhtalifoon, Ihdini lima-khtulifa feehi minal-haqqi bi-idhnik, Innaka tahdee man tasha'u ila Siratim Mustaqeem.

When to Read

While this profound supplication was a cherished part of the Prophet's ﷺ opening prayers during Qiyam al-Layl, its meaning extends far beyond specific prayer times. You can and should recite this dua whenever you find yourself in a situation of conflict, disagreement, or when someone has wronged you. It's particularly powerful when your heart is heavy with hurt, confusion, or anger, and you need Allah's divine wisdom to understand the truth of the matter, both externally and within yourself. It helps you seek clarity on how to respond, whether through seeking justice, patience, or the noble path of forgiveness.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and full presence of heart, acknowledging Allah's omnipotence and wisdom. Reflect on the attributes of Allah mentioned – His Lordship over the angels, His creation, His knowledge of all things, and His ultimate judgment. Approach it with humility, recognizing your own limitations in understanding and judgment, and submitting your heart to His guidance. This isn't just about reciting words; it's about a deep yearning for Allah to show you the right way, especially when your emotions are involved due to being wronged.

Virtues & Benefits

Divine Guidance in Conflict: This dua directly asks Allah to guide you to the truth in matters where people differ. When someone wrongs you, there is often a disagreement about what happened, why, and how to react. Seeking this guidance is crucial for gaining clarity, understanding their perspective (or their error), and discerning the most righteous and Islamic response.

Fosters Understanding: By asking Allah to guide you to the truth, you open your heart to a deeper understanding of the situation. This can involve understanding the other person's motivations, their context, or even your own role in the dynamic. Such understanding is often a necessary first step towards being able to forgive.

Opens the Path to Forgiveness: While the dua doesn't explicitly mention forgiveness, true understanding guided by Allah often leads to the capacity for it. When you comprehend the truth of a situation and are guided to the best path, you might find your heart softened, allowing you to choose forgiveness, which is a highly rewarded act in Islam.

Inner Peace and Clarity: Entrusting your difficult situation and emotional turmoil to Allah, the Knower of the unseen and seen, brings immense peace. You relinquish the burden of trying to figure everything out on your own and instead rely on His infinite wisdom to illuminate the path forward.

Following the Sunnah: Reciting this dua is an act of following the blessed practice of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, earning you reward and drawing you closer to his example.
