اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a foundational dua that can be recited at any time, especially during the quiet hours of the night or after prayers. It's particularly relevant when you feel a need to re-evaluate your circle of friends or are facing a situation where negative influences are present. Making it a regular habit can help you stay aligned with your values and the path of righteousness.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention. Raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible, and call upon Allah with humility. Reflect on the meaning of each word: guidance to the right path, piety to fear Allah, chastity to protect your honor and self, and contentment with what Allah has provided. Believe that Allah, in His infinite mercy, will hear your prayer and guide you.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking Allah's guidance (Hidayah) is paramount for navigating life's challenges, including choosing good companions. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this comprehensive dua, encompassing key elements for a balanced and righteous life. By asking for *al-huda* (guidance), we pray for direction towards what is right and true. Asking for *at-tuqa* (piety/consciousness of Allah) helps us stay mindful of His presence and commandments. *Al-'afaf* (chastity/abstinence) protects us from moral decay and harmful influences, while *al-ghina* (contentment/richness) refers to inner richness and satisfaction, preventing greed and discontent that can lead to poor choices. Together, these elements form a shield against negative companionship and ensure we seek those who will uplift us spiritually and morally.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No Prophet before me but he commanded the people to do the like of what I have commanded you. And I think that he said: '...to seek God-consciousness, chastity, and contentment with what is sufficient.'" (Sahih Muslim 2721)
