Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الهُدَى وَالتُّقَى والعَفَافَ والغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness (contentment).

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, particularly during the times when supplications are more likely to be answered, such as after obligatory prayers, during the last third of the night, or when experiencing moments of sincere reflection. It's especially relevant when you feel a need for direction in your life and a desire to draw closer to Allah, seeking His pardon and protection from sin.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands in supplication as is the practice. Believe that Allah has the power to grant your requests. It is beneficial to reflect on the meaning of each word: 'guidance' (al-huda) to the right path, 'piety' (at-tuqa) to fear Allah and avoid His displeasure, 'chastity' (al-'afaf) to remain pure from sin and neediness, and 'richness' (al-ghina) meaning contentment with what Allah has provided, freeing you from dependence on others. You can make this a regular part of your daily supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound request for spiritual and worldly well-being. By asking for guidance (al-huda), you are seeking Allah's help to stay on the straight path, avoiding misguidance. 'Piety' (at-tuqa) is the foundation of a righteous life, characterized by reverence and obedience to Allah. 'Chastity' (al-'afaf) encompasses purity of heart, mind, and actions, protecting one from falling into forbidden acts and from the shame and consequences associated with them. 'Richness' (al-ghina) here refers not necessarily to material wealth, but to a state of inner contentment and self-sufficiency, where one is not excessively desirous of worldly possessions or dependent on others, a true blessing from Allah. This comprehensive request covers the essential elements for a balanced and successful life in this world and the Hereafter.
