Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3845

O Allah, teach me the Book and the reckoning, and grant me understanding and wisdom, and enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteous deeds that please You, and admit me by Your mercy into Your righteous servants.

Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hisaba, wa fattirni bil-hikmah, wa awzi'ni an-ashkura ni'matakallati an'amta 'alayya wa 'ala walidayya wa an a'mala salihan tardahu wa adkhilni bi-rahmatika fi 'ibadik as-salihin

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication asks Allah for several profound gifts: knowledge of the Book (Quran), understanding of judgment and wisdom, the ability to discern and apply knowledge correctly (hikmah), gratitude for blessings, the capacity for righteous deeds, and ultimately, inclusion among the righteous servants of Allah. Seeking mentors is a manifestation of seeking beneficial knowledge and righteous companionship, which this dua directly addresses.

Source & Authentication

Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet ﷺ used to teach them this supplication, just as he taught them a Surah from the Quran: 'Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hisaba, wa fattirni bil-hikmah, wa awzi'ni an-ashkura ni'matakallati an'amta 'alayya wa 'ala walidayya wa an a'mala salihan tardahu wa adkhilni bi-rahmatika fi 'ibadik as-salihin.' (Translation: O Allah, teach me the Book and the reckoning, and grant me understanding and wisdom, and enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteous deeds that please You, and admit me by Your mercy into Your righteous servants.)
