Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالسَّدَادَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ التُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance and rightness, and I ask You for piety, chastity, and richness.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda was-sadad, wa as'alukat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite before sleeping, especially when seeking clarity or divine insight regarding a matter that might manifest in a dream. It's a plea for overall uprightness, which includes the ability to discern truth in all aspects of life, including one's sleep.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, preferably after performing Wudu and before sleeping. Focus on the meaning of each word, asking Allah to grant you not just general guidance, but also the ability to be steadfast (sadad) in following that guidance. The request for piety (tuqa), chastity ('afaf), and richness (ghina – often interpreted as inner contentment and freedom from need, not just material wealth) encompasses a holistic seeking of Allah's blessings.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful supplication that seeks fundamental blessings from Allah. Guidance (Huda) and rightness (Sadad) are the cornerstones of a life pleasing to Allah. Asking for piety (Tuqa) means seeking protection from His displeasure. Chastity ('Afaf) is a noble quality that protects one's honor and dignity. Inner richness (Ghina) brings contentment and independence from excessive reliance on creation. By asking for these, we are seeking Allah's help to live a balanced and righteous life, which would naturally extend to clarity in our dreams.

Narrated Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) taught us the Tashahhud and the saying of the Tashahhud: 'At-tahiyyatu li-llahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibatu. (All compliments, prayers and goodness are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.) And we recited this prayer (in the afflicted days). We did not know what to say in the midst of the prayers, but Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) taught us the prayer, and we began to say it. And it was said that 'Abdullah said: We learned the prayer and the supplication. A Supplication: Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda was-sadad, wa as'alukat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina. (O Allah, I ask You for guidance and rightness, and I ask You for piety, chastity, and richness).
