Dua for Guidance to Recognize and Reject False Prophets and Extremist Ideologies

Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 710

O Allah, show me truth as truth, and grant me the ability to follow it. And show me falsehood as falsehood, and grant me the ability to avoid it.

Allahumma arini al-haqqa haqqan wa-rqzurni ittiba'ahu, wa arini al-batila batilan wa-rqzurni ijtinabahu.

When to Read

This is a foundational dua for every Muslim, especially when faced with confusing ideas, differing opinions, or when encountering individuals or groups promoting extremist views. Recite it regularly after your obligatory prayers and whenever you feel uncertain about a matter.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands slightly as is customary for supplication. Focus on the meaning and truly ask Allah to open your eyes to what is right and to give you the strength to stay away from what is wrong. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though the essence of the dua is the sincerity of your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct plea to Allah for the ultimate gift: Hidayah (guidance). By asking Allah to distinguish truth from falsehood and to enable us to follow the truth, we are seeking protection from misguidance, innovation (bid'ah), and extremism. It ensures our actions and beliefs are aligned with the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, safeguarding us from following charismatic deceivers or ideologies that deviate from Islam's core principles. The ability to discern truth is a sign of a healthy and protected faith.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' (In some narrations, the addition for distinguishing truth from falsehood is also mentioned, as the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to show him truth as truth and grant him the ability to follow it, and show him falsehood as falsehood and grant him the ability to avoid it). This particular phrasing is widely cited and taught by scholars as a dua for discernment, based on the general principle of seeking guidance from Allah, and is strongly supported by the concept of seeking clarity between haqq and batil.
