O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I associate with You unknowingly.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika shai'an wa ana a'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lam
When to Read
This dua is profoundly important and should be recited regularly, especially after every prayer (Salah). It's a constant reminder to seek protection from the most insidious of sins, shirk, which can manifest in subtle ways. Make it a part of your daily remembrance, perhaps during the times of morning and evening supplications, or whenever you feel a need for greater clarity and spiritual purification.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Understand the gravity of shirk and the immense mercy of Allah in protecting us from it. Utter the words clearly, focusing on the meaning and the plea for divine protection. It is best recited immediately after finishing your obligatory prayers, just before you turn to speak to others. This timing highlights its importance as a final check on your devotion.
Virtues & Benefits
Shirk, the association of partners with Allah, is the gravest sin in Islam, unforgivable if one dies upon it without repentance (Al-Nisa 4:48). This dua is a direct plea to Allah for protection from falling into shirk, both the obvious and the hidden forms. By reciting it, especially after Salah, we are actively seeking Allah's grace to safeguard our 'aqeedah (creed) and ensure our worship is exclusively for Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his Companions, indicating its immense significance for the purification of faith and the avoidance of spiritual downfall. It fosters a continuous awareness of our reliance on Allah for even the most fundamental aspects of our faith.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'O people, beware of this Shirk, for it is more hidden than the footsteps of an ant.' Someone asked him: 'How can we beware of it, O Messenger of Allah, when it is more hidden than the footsteps of an ant?' He replied: 'Say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika shai'an wa ana a'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lam.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I associate with You unknowingly.) - Sahih al-Bukhari 7502.
