Sahih HadithThe Book of Prayer - Travellers 770a

O Allah, Lord of Jibreel, Mika'il, and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen. You judge between Your servants concerning that wherein they differ. Guide me to the truth concerning that wherein they differed by Your leave. Verily, You guide whom You will to a straight path.

Allahumma Rabba Jibreel wa Mika'eel wa Israfeel, Fatiras-samawati wal-ard, 'Alimal-ghaybi wash-shahadah, Anta tahkumu bayna 'ibadika fima kanu fihi yakhtalifun. Ihdini lima'khtulifa fihi minal-haqqi bi'idhnik. Innaka tahdi man tashaa'u ila Siratin Mustaqim.

When to Read

In the quiet hours of the night, as the world sleeps, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would rise for prayer, seeking Allah's profound guidance. His supplications were not mere words; they were deep expressions of reliance, illuminating the path to truth and sincerity. One such powerful dua, recited during his Tahajjud prayer, beautifully captures the essence of seeking clarity and discernment – a crucial need for any Muslim striving to avoid hypocrisy. This dua, though recorded as part of the Prophet's ﷺ night prayer, holds immense relevance for us in various moments. You can recite it whenever you feel the need for spiritual clarity, whether you're grappling with a complex decision, discerning truth from falsehood in daily life, or seeking to purify your intentions from any trace of insincerity. It’s particularly powerful during moments of quiet reflection, after prayers, or indeed, following the Sunnah, in the last third of the night when hearts are most receptive. Think of it as your personal compass, aligning your inner self with the straight path.

How to Read

When you recite this dua, remember who you are addressing: Allah, the Lord of the mighty angels, the Creator, the All-Knower. Let your heart be present. Understand that you are asking the only One who can truly guide you to distinguish truth from falsehood, and sincerity from hypocrisy. This means not just uttering the words, but truly intending to align your actions with your words, your inner self with your outer demeanor. Reflect on your daily interactions, your hidden motives, and ask Allah to show you where you might be veering from sincerity. Combine it with genuine effort to embody the qualities of an honest, sincere Muslim.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound supplication offers multiple layers of benefit, especially in our quest to discern and reject hypocrisy. Firstly, by calling upon Allah as the **"Knower of the unseen and the seen"** and the **"Judge between His servants concerning that wherein they differ,"** you are acknowledging His ultimate knowledge and authority. This humility itself is a shield against the arrogance that often underpins hypocrisy. Secondly, the direct plea **"Guide me to the truth concerning that wherein they differed by Your leave"** is a powerful request for **discernment (furqan)**. Hypocrisy is essentially a state of difference between one's inner belief and outer action, or between truth and falsehood. This dua asks Allah to illuminate the truth for you, helping you see through your own self-deceptions and the subtle ways insincerity can creep into your heart. Finally, the concluding affirmation, **"Verily, You guide whom You will to a straight path,"** reinforces your reliance on Allah alone for steadfastness. It strengthens your resolve to embody genuine faith, purifying your intentions and actions from any taint of showing off (riyaa') or double-facedness, which are hallmarks of hypocrisy. Reciting this dua is a practical step towards purifying your heart and striving for true sincerity in all aspects of your life.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) got up at night to pray, he would say: "O Allah, Lord of Jibreel, Mika'il and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen; You decide between Your servants concerning that wherein they differ. Guide me to the truth concerning that wherein they differed by Your leave. Verily, You guide whom You will to a straight path." — Sahih Muslim 770a
