اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْنِي الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ
O Allah, teach me the Book and wisdom.
Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hikmah
When to Read
This dua is particularly potent when seeking to understand new Islamic knowledge, preparing for study, or when facing a complex issue that requires deep understanding and correct application. Recite it regularly, especially after Fajr prayer, or whenever you embark on learning or teaching.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and focus, visualizing Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) bestowing His knowledge and understanding upon you. Raise your hands in supplication as you do so, facing the Qiblah if possible. Reflect on the meaning of the words as you utter them. It's beautiful to make this part of your regular supplications, perhaps after the obligatory prayers.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking knowledge is a highly praised act in Islam. This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his beloved grandson Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), is a direct request for two crucial elements: 'al-kitab' (the Book, referring to the Quran and its understanding) and 'al-hikmah' (wisdom, which encompasses the Sunnah and the ability to apply knowledge correctly). This supplication aims to grant the reciter profound comprehension and the ability to act upon what is learned, distinguishing truth from falsehood and applying it in the best manner.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): 'O Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, learn the Book and the wisdom.' Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is wisdom?' He said: 'Knowledge of the rulings and understanding.' (Though this specific hadith is not the direct source for the dua text, it highlights the importance of both the Book and wisdom. The dua itself is recorded as being taught to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, by the Prophet ﷺ. A similar request for understanding is found in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286: '...You are our protector, so grant us victory over the disbelieving people.' The Prophet ﷺ also made supplications seeking beneficial knowledge. For instance, he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and acceptable deeds.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 75). The specific dua 'Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hikmah' is found in Sunan Ibn Majah 250, narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).)
