Dua for Guidance and Strength to Overcome Temptations

Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى.

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.

When to Read

This is a profound dua that can be recited at any time, but it's particularly potent when you feel the pull of temptation, are facing a difficult choice, or simply wish to strengthen your resolve in remaining steadfast on the straight path. It's also an excellent supplication to make after the obligatory prayers, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized making such requests after salah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands as you would during prayer and face the Qiblah if possible. Reflect on the meaning of each word: asking for 'guidance' (al-huda) to know the right path, 'piety' (at-tuqa) to fear Allah and avoid sin, 'chastity' (al-'afafa) to protect yourself from forbidden desires, and 'self-sufficiency' (al-ghina) to be content with what Allah has provided and avoid seeking from others illicitly. Believe that Allah is capable of granting your request.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a comprehensive request for spiritual well-being. Seeking guidance ensures you know the right way; seeking piety makes you mindful of Allah's presence and prompts you to avoid what displeases Him. Chastity protects your honor and your relationships, while self-sufficiency brings contentment and freedom from need, especially from unlawful means. By asking for these, you are essentially asking for the tools to navigate life's challenges and temptations with strength and steadfastness, pleasing Allah in the process.
