اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى
O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.
Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina
When to Read
This dua is a comprehensive supplication for overall well-being and uprightness. It's particularly relevant when seeking clarity in matters of faith, protecting oneself from straying, and desiring a life aligned with Islamic principles, which inherently means avoiding innovations (bid'ah). Recite it at any time, especially after prayers or during the night.
How to Read
Raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible. Recite with sincerity and a humble heart, believing that Allah is the only one who can grant guidance and protection. Repeat the dua if you wish, and follow it with other supplications.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful dua encompasses seeking Allah's guidance to the right path (Hidayah), which naturally includes steering clear of deviations and innovations. It also asks for Taqwa (piety/consciousness of Allah), which is the foundation of all good deeds and the best protection against sin and misguidance. 'Afaf (chastity/abstinence from what is unlawful) and Ghina (contentment/self-sufficiency) further solidify a Muslim's strength and independence from seeking validation or means outside of Allah. By asking for these, we are, in effect, seeking protection from the subtle influences that lead to bid'ah.
