Dua for Guidance and Opening of Hearts to Islam

Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 3498 (Bukhari), 2124 (Muslim)

اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ قَوْمِي فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

O Allah! Guide my people, for they do not know.

Allahumma ihdi qawmi fa innahum la ya'lamun

When to Read

This dua is beautifully exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. When faced with rejection or misunderstanding from a people, he would turn to Allah with this supplication, asking for guidance for them because their ignorance was the root of their opposition. We can make this dua whenever we see people who are not yet Muslim, or even those who are Muslim but straying from the path, and we feel a sincere desire for them to find the truth and beauty of Islam. It's a dua born out of compassion, not judgment.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a sincere heart, focusing on the intention for the person or people you are making dua for. It's a direct plea to Allah, the Granter of guidance. Speak to Him as you would a loving, all-knowing guardian. The essence is a quiet, heartfelt request directed towards the heavens, reflecting the Prophet's ﷺ own practice of seeking Allah's intervention.

Virtues & Benefits

The greatest benefit of this dua is fulfilling the spirit of *da'wah* (inviting others to Islam) with wisdom and mercy. It mirrors the Prophet's ﷺ compassion for humanity. By asking Allah to guide them, you are actively participating in a spiritual effort for their well-being. This reflects the Islamic principle of enjoining good and forbidding evil, done here through supplication. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that the best of people are those who are most beneficial to others. Seeking guidance for someone is a profound act of seeking their benefit, both in this life and the next.

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: While the Prophet ﷺ was praying with the polytheists around the Ka'bah, he supplicated: 'O Allah, seize Abu Jahl and 'Uqbah bin Mu'ait and so-and-so...' (The Prophet ﷺ mentioned seven of them). The Prophet ﷺ said: 'By Allah, if you were to supplicate like this until your death, it would be said your head is the head of a hanged man.' Then the Prophet ﷺ later came and stood by their dead bodies in the well on the day of Badr and said: 'Is it true that you found what your Lord promised you? I found that what my Lord promised me is true.' Then he uttered: 'O Allah! You have not destroyed them.' Then he said: 'These people were defeated and their opponents will be defeated.' Then he mentioned God's saying: 'Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad) a manifest victory.' Then he said: 'O Allah, guide my people, for they do not know.' (This hadith, while mentioning a specific context of supplication against enemies, also contains the Prophet's ﷺ general prayer for guidance for his people, reflecting his ultimate mercy.)
