اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْنِي مِنَ الْعِلْمِ مَا يَنْفَعُنِي، وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا
O Allah, teach me the knowledge that benefits me, and increase me in knowledge.
Allahumma 'allimni minal-'ilmi ma yanfa'uni, wa zidni 'ilman

This dua is perfect to recite daily, especially after Fajr or before seeking knowledge. It’s particularly relevant when you feel a desire to deepen your understanding of Islam, and to grasp its teachings with the clarity and conviction that the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them all) possessed.

Recite this sincerely with full conviction in your heart. Imagine the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his Companions learning from the Source of all knowledge, Allah (Glory be to Him). Reflect on what 'beneficial knowledge' means to you, and ask Allah to grant you that.

This supplication directly asks Allah for beneficial knowledge, which is the cornerstone of understanding Islam. The Companions' understanding was profound because they learned directly from the Prophet ﷺ and dedicated themselves to implementing what they learned. By asking for this kind of knowledge, we seek to follow in their footsteps, enabling us to practice Islam as they did, with wisdom and devotion.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say: 'Allahumma 'allimni minal-'ilmi ma yanfa'uni, wa zidni 'ilman.' (O Allah, teach me the knowledge that benefits me, and increase me in knowledge.)" (Sunan Ibn Majah 3823). Al-Tirmidhi also narrated a similar version (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3594) grading it Hasan Gharib. The understanding of the Companions was unparalleled as they received revelation directly or indirectly, and lived in the Prophet's ﷺ presence, witnessing his every action and hearing his every word. This dua is a means for us to strive for a similar depth.
