اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ
O Allah, make me comprehend the religion and teach me its interpretation.
Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen wa 'allimnit-ta'weel
When to Read
Recite this dua frequently, especially when engaging with contemporary discussions, academic texts, or media that present interpretations of Islam different from the mainstream understanding derived from the Quran and Sunnah. It's particularly beneficial when encountering ideas that seem to challenge established Islamic principles or when feeling uncertain about how to reconcile certain viewpoints with the deen. Make it a habit before or after reading such materials, or as a consistent supplication in your daily prayers.
How to Read
Raise your hands in supplication as you would during prayer. Face the Qiblah if possible, with a sincere heart and a clear intention to seek Allah's guidance. Utter the words with conviction, reflecting on their meaning and the profound need for Allah's direct intervention in understanding His deen. It can be recited at any time, but making it a part of your obligatory prayers or during the blessed times like the last third of the night, after Asr on Friday, or between the Adhan and Iqamah, can enhance its impact.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua, attributed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asking Allah for understanding and interpretation, directly addresses the need for sound knowledge and the ability to discern correct meanings. In an age where information is abundant and interpretations can vary widely, seeking Allah's wisdom to 'comprehend the religion' (faqqihni fid-deen) is crucial. The request to be taught 'interpretation' (ta'weel) specifically equips one to understand the deeper meanings and contexts of Islamic texts, thus enabling them to navigate and counter interpretations that deviate from the divinely guided path. It is a proactive step towards maintaining one's faith against intellectual challenges.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put his hand on my shoulder and said: 'O Allah, teach him the Book (i.e., the interpretation of the Quran).'' (Sunan Ibn Majah 255). This hadith highlights the Prophet's ﷺ own supplication for understanding, showing the immense importance of comprehending the meanings behind revelation, which extends to understanding the entire religion and its principles.
