Guidance & Hidayah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالتُّقَىٰ وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَىٰ

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment/self-sufficiency.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a profound supplication that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial to say it after the obligatory prayers (Salat). It's also excellent to make this dua during the times when duas are more readily accepted, such as the last third of the night, between the Adhan and Iqamah, or during moments of sincere reflection and need.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a sincere heart, focusing on the meaning of each word. Imagine asking directly from Allah, the One who controls all outcomes. Raise your hands in supplication as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Understand that seeking guidance and purpose is a continuous journey, and this dua is a powerful tool for that journey. Be patient, for Allah's answers may come in ways we don't always expect.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates the essence of seeking a life of true purpose and meaning. * **Guidance (الْهُدَىٰ - al-huda):** This is the ultimate guidance, the light that illuminates the path to Allah and righteousness. It encompasses knowledge, understanding, and the ability to act upon what is right. * **Piety (التُّقَىٰ - at-tuqa):** This refers to God-consciousness, the awareness of Allah in all our actions, leading to a life of abstinence from sin and adherence to His commands. It is the shield that protects us from His displeasure. * **Chastity/Self-Sufficiency (الْعَفَافَ - al-'afafa):** This encompasses both inner purity and outer self-restraint. It means being content with what Allah has provided, refraining from begging from people, and maintaining one's dignity. * **Contentment/Self-Sufficiency (الْغِنَىٰ - al-ghina):** This is the richness of the heart, the contentment with what Allah has destined. It's not necessarily about material wealth, but about inner wealth and freedom from neediness, which truly brings peace and allows one to focus on higher purposes.
