Dua for Protection from Evil Speech and Negative Energy in Gatherings

Gatherings & Meetings
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 926

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demolition of Your blessings, the turning of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all that You detest. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of character, deeds, and desires.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min munkaratil-akhlaqi wal-a'mali wal-ahwa'.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for reciting before entering any gathering, meeting, or social situation where you anticipate potentially negative speech, backbiting, gossip, or simply an atmosphere that might drain your energy or expose you to undesirable influences. It's also beneficial to say when leaving a gathering where such things occurred, seeking purification.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and concentration. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's protection. Raise your hands slightly in supplication if you feel comfortable doing so. You can recite it just before you enter the gathering, or even as you are walking towards it. Remembering this dua in the moment can be a powerful shield.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers multifaceted protection. It safeguards you from the loss of divine favors ('ni'mah') and the reversal of good health and well-being ('afiyah'). Crucially, it shields you from sudden divine punishment ('niqmah') and the displeasure of Allah ('sakhatik'). Most relevant to gatherings, it provides refuge from 'munkarat al-akhlaq' (the evil, objectionable aspects of character) and 'al-a'mal' (deeds), which often manifest as gossip, backbiting, and hurtful speech in social settings. It also protects against 'al-ahwa'' (base desires and inclinations) that can lead one astray.

Source & Authentication

Thumamah ibn Shariq reported: I heard 'Aishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to invoke Allah much during his life. He used to invoke Him with these words: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-'afwa wal-'afiyah fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimail wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi 'azamati ka an ughtala min tahti' (O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my defects and secure me against what I fear. O Allah, guard me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your magnificence from being struck from beneath me). And he mentioned: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min munkaratil-akhlaqi wal-a'mali wal-ahwa'' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demolition of Your blessings, the turning of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all that You detest. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of character, deeds, and desires).
