Dua for Peace and Tranquility at Family Gatherings

Gatherings & Meetings
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 948

O Allah, unite our hearts, and reconcile the matters between us, and guide us to the ways of peace. Deliver us from the darkness into the light. Keep us away from all shameful deeds, whether open or secret. Bless our hearing, our sight, our hearts, our wives, and our offspring. Accept our repentance, for You are the Accepter of repentance and the Most Merciful.

Allahumma allif bayna qulubina, wa aslih dhata baynina, wahdina subulas-salam, wa najjina minadh-dhulumati ilan-nur, wa jannibnal-fawāḥisha ma ẓahara minha wa ma baṭan, wa barik lana fi asma'ina, wa abṣārinā, wa qulubina, wa azwajina, wa dhurriyatina, wa tub 'alayna, innaka Antat-Tawwabur-Raḥim.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for reciting at the beginning of any family gathering, meeting, or reunion. It's an ideal way to set a positive and harmonious tone before interactions begin, asking Allah to foster understanding, peace, and connection amongst relatives. Recite it as everyone is gathering, perhaps before a meal or a formal start to the event.

How to Read

This dua should be recited with sincere intention and heartfelt supplication. Raise your hands in the traditional manner of dua, facing the Qiblah if possible, and pour your heart out to Allah. Focus on each phrase, truly meaning the request for unity, guidance, and protection for your family. It's a collective supplication, so encouraging family members to recite it together or for the elder to lead it would be highly beneficial.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful supplication encapsulates a profound request for familial harmony and spiritual well-being. By asking Allah to 'unite our hearts' and 'reconcile the matters between us,' we are seeking His divine intervention to mend any rifts, prevent misunderstandings, and foster deep bonds of love and respect. The request to be guided to 'the ways of peace' and delivered 'from darkness into light' asks for protection from discord and a path towards righteousness. Furthermore, asking Allah to 'bless our hearing, our sight, our hearts, our wives, and our offspring' is a holistic plea for the well-being of the entire family unit across all aspects of life. This emphasis on unity and reconciliation aligns with the Islamic emphasis on maintaining strong family ties (Silat ar-Rahim).

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught us the Tashahhud and the prayer of need (salat al-hajah), and the prayer for two rak'ahs before the Friday prayer, and what to say after the Salam. He taught us: 'Allahumma allif bayna qulubina, wa aslih dhata baynina, wahdina subulas-salam, wa najjina minadh-dhulumati ilan-nur, wa jannibnal-fawāḥisha ma ẓahara minha wa ma baṭan, wa barik lana fi asma'ina, wa abṣārinā, wa qulubina, wa azwajina, wa dhurriyatina, wa tub 'alayna, innaka Antat-Tawwabur-Raḥim.' (O Allah, unite our hearts, and reconcile the matters between us, and guide us to the ways of peace. Deliver us from the darkness into the light. Keep us away from all shameful deeds, whether open or secret. Bless our hearing, our sight, our hearts, our wives, and our offspring. Accept our repentance, for You are the Accepter of repentance and the Most Merciful.)
