Dua for Harmony and Understanding in Family Gatherings

Gatherings & Meetings
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 994

O Allah, unite our hearts, mend the discord between us, guide us to the ways of peace, deliver us from darkness to light, and bless our hearing, our sight, our hearts, our spouses, and our offspring. Turn to us in repentance, for You are the Ever-Returning, the Most Merciful.

Allahumma allif bayna qulubina, wa aslih dhata baynina, wahdina subulas-salam, wa najjina minadh-dhulumati ilan-nur, wa barik lana fi asma'ina, wa absarina, wa qulubina, wa azwajina, wa dhurriyyatina, wa tub 'alayna, innaka antat-Tawwabur-Rahim.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is perfect to recite before a large family reunion, especially if there's a history of minor disagreements or a potential for misunderstandings to arise due to differing opinions or personalities. Recite it individually before you arrive, or perhaps as a family leader, recite it aloud with everyone present, just before the gathering truly begins.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and a pure intention. Raise your hands as you would in supplication. Focus on the meaning of the words, truly asking Allah to foster love, understanding, and peace among your family members. It's a prayer for the collective well-being of the family's relationships.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encapsulates a profound request for spiritual and social harmony. By asking Allah to 'unite our hearts' and 'mend the discord between us,' we're seeking His divine intervention to smooth over any potential friction. The request to be guided 'to the ways of peace' and delivered 'from darkness to light' is a plea for clarity and righteous conduct. It also includes a comprehensive plea for blessings in our senses, families, and for forgiveness, making it a comprehensive prayer for a positive and blessed family gathering.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua to the Muslims. It is narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no two who love each other for the sake of Allah, but that the best of them is the one who is best to his companion, and they are both upon that. And there is no two who have a disagreement, but that one of them seeks the decree of Allah, and the other is pleased with the decree of Allah, and both of them are upon that, and it is incumbent upon them that they be pleased.' (This context highlights the importance of reconciliation and seeking Allah's decree in relationships). Another narration for a similar dua is found in Sunan Abi Dawud 994, which is the basis for this entry, focusing on reconciling relationships and guiding towards peace.
