Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.

Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa ant, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.

It's especially poignant when a group of people have gathered, perhaps having indulged in idle talk, backbiting, or other unintentional sins. It serves as a powerful way to purify the assembly and seek Allah's forgiveness for any shortcomings, acknowledging our human frailty and our constant need for His mercy. Imagine concluding a family dinner, a study circle, or even a work meeting with this beautiful supplication.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humbled heart. Understand the meaning of each phrase: acknowledging Allah's perfection, testifying to His oneness, and seeking His forgiveness and acceptance of repentance. It's generally recited once, but one can repeat it if they feel a deep connection to its meaning or a greater need for seeking pardon. The key is the presence of the heart and the tongue speaking the truth of faith and dependence on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive means of seeking Allah's forgiveness for the sins committed, both knowingly and unknowingly, by individuals within a gathering. It cleanses the assembly, turning potential negative impacts into a source of divine mercy. The Prophet ﷺ himself would make this dua, indicating its immense importance and efficacy. It encapsulates Tawhid (oneness of Allah), praise, and Istighfar (seeking forgiveness), hitting the most crucial aspects of our relationship with our Creator after a collective engagement. Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever sits in a gathering and speaks too much therein and before leaving, says: Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. Except that it will be an expiation for that which was in the gathering." (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3433)
