Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 253

اللَّهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِي فِي الدِّينِ وَعَلِّمْنِي التَّأْوِيلَ

Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen wa 'allimnit-ta'weel

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when seeking understanding of complex Islamic rulings, especially on a blessed day like Friday. You can recite it after the Fardh prayers of Jumuah, or any time you are studying Islamic texts, attending lectures, or contemplating difficult fiqh issues. Making it a habit after the Jumuah prayer can imbue your week with beneficial knowledge.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands as you would for other supplications, focusing on the meaning of the words. Picture in your mind the vastness of Islamic knowledge and your sincere desire to grasp its intricacies. Focus on the understanding of both the practical rulings (fiqh) and the deeper meanings and interpretations (ta'weel) of Allah's Book.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking profound understanding in religious matters is a noble pursuit. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ supplicated for this exact type of knowledge, indicating its immense value. Having clarity in Islamic rulings allows us to worship Allah correctly, avoid misguidance, and implement our faith with certainty. It is a means to draw closer to Allah through knowledge and sound practice.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ took hold of his shoulders and said, 'O Allah, teach him the Book (i.e., the Quran).' (Sunan Ibn Majah 253). While this specific narration focuses on the Quran, the underlying principle of seeking knowledge and understanding of the Deen applies broadly. Another relevant hadith from Bukhari (7525) and Muslim (2414) states that whoever Allah wishes good for, He grants him understanding of the religion. This dua is a direct request for that blessed understanding.
