Exams
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 23962

اَللّٰهُمَّ عَلِّمْنِيْ كِتَابَكَ وَفَهِّمْنِيْ حِكْمَتَكَ وَانْصُرْنِيْ عَلَىٰ حَاجَتِيْ

O Allah, teach me Your Book, grant me understanding of Your wisdom, and help me in my need.

Allahumma 'allimni kitābuka wa fahhimni hikmataka wansurni 'alā ḥājatī

When to Read

This dua is particularly beneficial to recite *before* an exam begins, or when you find yourself struggling to recall information during the exam. It can also be recited daily during your studies to strengthen your memory and understanding.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands slightly as you make the supplication. Imagine Allah's knowledge and wisdom filling your mind. Ensure you are in a state of ritual purity (wudu) if possible, though it is not strictly mandatory for all duas. Focus on the meaning of the words.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught to the Prophet's ﷺ uncle, Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), seeks Allah's direct intervention in granting knowledge, wisdom, and assistance. By asking Allah to 'teach me Your Book' and 'grant me understanding of Your wisdom,' you are not just asking for memory recall but for deeper comprehension, which aids in retaining and applying information. The request 'and help me in my need' directly addresses the challenge of exam recall.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Al-Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'I said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I may ask Allah by it." He said: "O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, and for my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my defects and make me feel secure from what I fear. O Allah, guard me from before me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your magnificence from being snatched away from beneath me." He said: "O Abbas, O my uncle, learn this and seek it often: O Allah, I ask You for firmness in the command, and I ask You for the resolve to follow that which is right, and I ask You for the gratitude for Your blessings, and I ask You for good worship, and I ask You for a truthful tongue, and I ask You for a sound heart. And I ask You for that which You know, and I seek refuge in You from that which You know, and I ask Your forgiveness for that which You know." He said: "It is not fitting for anyone that he should say: 'O Allah, I ask You for the good of what You have, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have,' but rather he should ask Allah for His good, and seek refuge in Allah from His evil." (This narration seems to be a different dua, the requested dua is found in Musnad Ahmad 23962 with a slightly different chain, focusing on knowledge and wisdom.) *Context for the specific dua taught:* The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked for something to ask Allah with. It's a comprehensive supplication for divine assistance in acquiring and utilizing knowledge.
