Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, and provision that is pure, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited after Fajr (morning) prayer. It's particularly relevant when you are about to embark on a period of intense study, preparing for exams, or beginning any task that requires knowledge and concentration. Making it a habit after Fajr integrates seeking Allah's blessings into your daily routine, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Ensure you are in a state of wudu (ablution) if possible, facing the Qiblah. Begin by praising Allah and sending Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Then, recite the dua clearly, focusing on the meaning and asking Allah sincerely. Remember that Allah responds to the supplications of those who are heedful and turn to Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking three crucial aspects for success, both in this life and the hereafter: 1. **Beneficial Knowledge ('Ilman Naafi'an):** This isn't just about memorizing facts, but knowledge that leads to good deeds, understanding the Deen, and benefiting oneself and others. 2. **Pure Provision (Rizqan Tayyiban):** This includes lawful earnings, good health, and all the good things Allah provides. Seeking pure provision ensures that the energy derived from it is also pure and pleasing to Allah. 3. **Accepted Deeds ('Amalan Mutaqabbalan):** This is the ultimate goal – that our efforts, including our studies and efforts to gain knowledge for exams, are accepted by Allah. Acceptance means they are done with the right intention, according to the Sunnah, and for His sake. This dua is comprehensive and covers the foundational elements for success in all endeavors.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, and provision that is pure, and deeds that are accepted.) He would say this after the salam of the prayer.
