Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was with Gabriel (peace be upon him), he looked up and saw a celestial being smiling. Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: 'This is an angel who has never laughed before, and he asked Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) to allow him to laugh, so He permitted him.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: 'O Gabriel, what did he ask his Lord?' Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: 'He asked his Lord (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) to make him an angel who would laugh. So he was made into such an angel.' Then Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: 'When someone recites this dua: 'Allahumma-ftah 'alayya futuhal-'arifin', Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) will make him among the knowledgeable.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 1302). The chain of narration indicates this hadith is Hasan.
