Seeking Allah's Protection from Loneliness and Isolation at Night

Daily Evening Routine
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahri-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly relevant as we prepare for sleep. Nightfall can sometimes amplify feelings of loneliness or worry, especially if we are alone. Reciting this as part of your evening routine, perhaps after your Isha prayer or just before you lie down, is a beautiful way to entrust your concerns to Allah and seek His overwhelming protection as you transition into rest.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart. Raise your hands slightly if you are able, as is the practice when making dua. Imagine each phrase as a shield, with Allah's mercy encompassing you. Focus on the meaning of each plea – seeking refuge from emotional distress (worry and grief), from lack of ability or motivation (incapacity and laziness), from fear and miserliness (cowardice and stinginess), and from being overcome by burdens (debt) or by the oppression of others (subjugation of men).

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, offers immense spiritual and psychological benefits. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge His power and our dependence on Him. This act can alleviate feelings of helplessness that can contribute to loneliness. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite this dua regularly, teaching us its importance in facing life's challenges. It helps us to overcome internal struggles like anxiety and apathy, and external pressures like financial burdens and difficult relationships. It is a proactive way to guard our hearts and minds against distress, fostering peace and contentment, even when physically alone.
