O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-juhni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal
When to Read
This dua is particularly powerful to recite as the evening approaches, perhaps after Asr prayer or just before Maghrib. It's a moment when the day's energy might wane, and the temptation to become idle can increase. By reciting this, you are actively seeking Allah's protection against the very feelings that lead to procrastination and a lack of motivation for the night's activities, whether that's worship, family time, or productive personal tasks.
How to Read
Recite this supplication with sincerity and focus, directing your heart towards Allah. Imagine yourself genuinely seeking His protection from these negative states. It's beneficial to reflect on each phrase and what it means for your daily life, especially as you transition into the evening hours.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking refuge in Allah from laziness ('kasal') is crucial because idleness can prevent us from fulfilling our duties towards Allah, our families, and ourselves. This hadith, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, is a comprehensive shield against various spiritual and material burdens, including the 'laziness' that can lead us astray from beneficial evening activities and worship.

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), and collected in Sahih al-Bukhari.
