Dua for Repelling Evening Doubts and Whispers of Temptation

Daily Evening Routine
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3893

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recommended to be recited as evening approaches. As the day winds down, our guards can sometimes lower, making us more susceptible to the whispers of Shaytan and intrusive thoughts that can lead to doubt or temptation. Reciting this as you prepare for the night, perhaps after Asr prayer or before Maghrib, can fortify your heart and mind against such influences.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction, focusing on the meaning and seeking Allah's protection. It's best to recite it with a present heart, visualizing Allah's perfect words as a shield. You can raise your hands slightly as you supplicate or simply recite it while sitting or standing. The key is the earnestness of your plea to the Almighty.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection against various forms of harm, both spiritual and physical. By seeking refuge in Allah's 'perfect words,' we are invoking His absolute power and wisdom. It specifically guards against: * **Allah's Anger and Punishment:** A reminder of our accountability and a plea for His mercy. * **The Evil of His Creation:** This covers general harm from people or other creatures. * **Whispers of Devils (Shayateen):** This is crucial for warding off intrusive thoughts, doubts, and temptations that can plague us, especially during vulnerable times like the evening.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'When any one of you experiences the evening (i.e. it becomes evening), he should say: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the whispers of devils and from their presence.) For verily, they (shayateen) will not harm him.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3893. Graded Hasan by some scholars).
