Seeking Allah's Protection from Temptations Before Sleep

Evening Adhkar
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5054

In the name of Allah, I lie down with my side. O Allah, forgive my sins, expel my Satan, release me from my bond, weigh down my scale, and make my deeds among Your creation significant. I seek refuge in You from the evil of the day, from the evil of the night, from the evil hour, from the evil glance, from the evil word, and from the evil of every creature You are holding by its forelock. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.

Bismillahi, wa da'tu janbi. Allahumma ighfir li dhanbi, wa akhrij shaytani, wa-fkuk rihani, wa thaqqil mizani, waj'al li fi makhluqatika shay'an, wa a'udhu bika min yawm is-soo', wa min laylat is-soo', wa min sa'at is-soo', wa min nadhrat is-soo', wa min kalimat is-soo', wa min sharri kulli dabbatٍ anta akhidhun binasiyatiha. Inna Rabbi 'ala siratin mustaqeem.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is recommended to be recited just before lying down to sleep. It serves as a powerful shield against all forms of harm and temptation that might arise during the night, including whispers of Satan, impure thoughts, and the potential for falling into sin. Making this a part of your evening routine helps to secure your spiritual well-being as you rest.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. It is preferable to lie on your right side, as taught by the Sunnah, and then recite this supplication. Ensure your intention is to seek Allah's protection and forgiveness before surrendering to sleep.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a deep reliance on Allah (SWT) for protection. It acknowledges His mastery over all creation and seeks His aid in warding off specific evils like the whispers of Satan ('shaytani') and the potential for our deeds to be weighed down negatively ('thawqil mizani'). By asking Allah to make our deeds significant ('waj'al li fi makhluqatika shay'an'), we are essentially seeking His acceptance and making them heavy on the scales of good deeds. The comprehensive seeking of refuge from all types of evil – day, night, hour, glance, word – demonstrates a profound awareness of how sin can creep in, especially when one is vulnerable, such as when falling asleep.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua to his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked him for words to supplicate with in times of difficulty or before sleep. It is a comprehensive supplication that covers spiritual, physical, and even moral protection.
