In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side. In Your name, I raise it. If You should take my soul, then have mercy upon it. And if You should return it, then protect it with what You protect Your righteous servants.
Bismika Rabbi wada'tu janbi, wa bika arfa'uhu. In amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsal-taha fahfadha bima tahfazu bihi 'ibadakas-salihin.

Narrated by Abu Salama bin 'Abdur Rahman: I asked 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), 'How was the prayer of Allah's Messenger ﷺ at night?' She replied, 'He would sleep during the first part of the night, and then pray during the latter part, and then the second part of the night he would sleep and then the last part of the night he would pray. His feet would get swollen or his legs would get swollen. He would perform two rak'at before the morning (prayer) and then lie down on his right side till the call for the (morning) prayer came to him. Abu Salama asked 'Aisha, 'How used he to pray?' She replied, 'Thirteen rak'at in all.' He added, 'He would perform the night prayer (in the mosque) at night.' (He said that he did not know the details about it). When the Prophet ﷺ got up for the night prayer, he would say: 'Labbayka wa sa'daik, wal-khayru kulluhu fi yadayk, wash-sharru laysa ilaika, anal-madu ilayka, tabarakta wa ta'alayt, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaika.' (I am here at Your service and happy to serve You, and all goodness is in Your Hands, and evil is not to You; I am a servant seeking refuge with You, Blessed and Exalted are You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance). And when he bowed, he would say: 'Subhana Rabbiyal-'Adhim.' (Glory be to my Lord, the Most Magnificent). And when he raised his head from bowing, he would say: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah.' (Allah hears whoever praises Him). He would say: 'Rabbana walakal-hamd.' (Our Lord, and praise be to You). And when he prostrated, he would say: 'Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la.' (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High). And when he raised his head from prostration, he would say: 'Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la.' (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High). He would say many prayers in bowing and prostrating, but his prayers in a standing posture were longer than his prayers in bowing or prostrating. He would perform two rak'at before the morning prayer in his house, and between the two rak'at he would say: 'Allahumma Rabbil-Jibril wa Mika'il wa Israfil, a'udhu bika minan-nar wa min 'adhabil-qabr.' (O Allah! Lord of Gabriel, Michael, Israfil, I seek refuge with You from the Hellfire and from the punishment of the grave). When he got up for the night prayer, he would say: 'Allahumma lakal-hamd. Anta Qaiyimus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinna. Wa lakal-hamd. Laka mulkus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinna. Wa lakal-hamd. Anta Noorus-samawati wal-ardi. (O Allah! To You be all praise. You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and whatever is in them. To You be all praise. Yours is the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and whatever is in them. To You be all praise. You are the Light of the heavens and the earth. To You be all praise. You are the Truth, Your promise is Truth, meeting You is Truth, Your word is Truth, Paradise is Truth, Hell is Truth, our Prophets are Truth, Muhammad is Truth, and the Hour is Truth. O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, entrusted my affairs to You, turned my face towards You, and have clung to my back for You, seeking good and fearing Your punishment. There is no refuge or safety from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You revealed, and in Your Messenger whom You sent). Then he would say: 'Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.' (Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire). He would say: 'Rabbighfir li dhanbi kullahu, jaddahu wa qallahu, wa sirrahu wa 'alaniyatahu, wa awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu.' (O my Lord, forgive me my sin, all of it, the minor and the major, the secret and the open, the first and the last, the public and the secret). He would prolong his standing, bowing and prostration. He used to pray eleven rak'at (in the night prayer). When it was the morning prayer, he would perform two rak'at and then lie on his right side till the time of the morning prayer. It was related from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud that he said: 'The Prophet ﷺ used to say when he went to bed: 'Allahumma nawwir qulubi bin-nurik, wa 'aqlbi bin-urika, wa bish-shukri li ni'amik, wa bish-shihhadati li qawlika, wa ahya'i bita'atika, wa qawwini 'ala dzikrika, wa 'ala shukrika, wa husni 'ibadatika, wa 'ala munaqqatil-qur'ani, wa ta'ammulihi, wa tawaffani musliman, wa ahya'ni musliman, wa alhiqni bis-salihin, ghaira khazi wa la maftunin.' (O Allah! Light up my heart with Your light, and my mind with Your light, and with gratitude for Your blessings, and with the testimony of Your Word, and with my living by Your obedience, and strengthen me in Your remembrance, and in Your gratitude, and in worshipping You well, and in the reading and contemplation of the Qur'an, and cause me to die as a Muslim and live as a Muslim, and join me with the righteous, not disgraced and not tried). He also used to say: 'Allahumma aslimtu wajhi ilaika, wa fawwadtu amri ilaika, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilaika, wa alja'tu dhahri ilaika, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika, la maljaa wa la manja minka illa ilaika. Allahumma aamantu bikitabika-lladhi anzalt, wa birasulika-lladhi arsalt.' (O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, entrusted my affairs to You, turned my face towards You, and have clung to my back for You, seeking good and fearing Your punishment. There is no refuge or safety from You except with You. O Allah! I believe in Your Book which You revealed, and in Your Messenger whom You sent). He also used to say: 'Allahumma qini 'adhaba yawm ta'udzu 'ibaduka aw ta'dudhu.' (O Allah! Save me from the punishment of the Day when You raise Your servants). He also used to say: 'Allahumma hdnini fi man hadayt, wa 'afini fi man 'afayt, wa tawallani fi man tawallayt, wa barik li fima a'tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alaik, innahu la yadhillu man walayt, wa la ya'izzu man 'adayt, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alayt.' (O Allah! Guide me among those whom You have guided, and grant me well-being among those whom You have granted well-being. And take me as an ally among those whom You have taken as an ally. And bless me in what You have bestowed. And protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily, You decree and no decree is made against You, and verily he is not humiliated whom You have taken as an ally. Blessed art Thou, our Lord, and Exalted). This hadith shows various supplications the Prophet ﷺ used to make, including seeking refuge and protection. The specific dua in the entry is a core part of this comprehensive seeking of Allah's protection before sleep.
