Seeking Allah's Guidance on the Best Path in the Evening

Evening Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a beautiful and comprehensive supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite in the morning, but its essence is relevant for seeking guidance at any time, including the evening. As the day ends, and we prepare for rest, it's a perfect moment to reflect on our actions and ask Allah to guide our steps and decisions for the night and the coming day. Reciting it as part of your evening adhkar (remembrance of Allah) can bring immense peace and clarity.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Raise your hands slightly if possible, as is customary when making dua. Focus on the meaning of each word: asking for guidance to the right path, piety to fear Allah and stay away from sin, chastity to be pure in body and character, and contentment with what Allah has provided. You can say this after praying your Maghrib or Isha prayer, or simply as part of your personal supplications before sleep.

Virtues & Benefits

This single dua encapsulates profound requests. Seeking 'guidance' (al-huda) means asking Allah to show us the right way in all aspects of life, from major decisions to daily choices. 'Piety' (at-tuqa) is the consciousness of Allah, the shield that protects us from wrongdoing. 'Chastity' (al-'afaf) is asking for purity and modesty in our dealings and our outward appearance. Finally, 'contentment' (al-ghina) means being satisfied with what Allah has decreed and provided, guarding us against greed and dissatisfaction. This supplication helps one live a balanced life, pleasing to Allah.
