O Allah, I ask You for the best of this night and the best of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what follows it. O Allah, I ask You for honour and remembrance in this world and the Hereafter, and I seek refuge in You from all evil, all adornments, and everything that distracts me from Your remembrance, from praying at night, and from all good. O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light in my tongue, light in my intellect, light in my religion, and light in my body, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what follows it. O Allah, place light in my grave, and place light with me, and light on my face, and increase me in light. O Allah, make for me light in my grave, and light in my grave, and make for me light upon the bridge (Sirat), and light in Paradise. O Allah, do not let me die except as a Muslim, and let me live as a Muslim, and join me with the righteous, not in disgrace nor in trial.
Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihi al-laylah, wa khayra ma ba'daha, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihi al-laylah, wa sharri ma ba'daha. Allahumma inni as'aluka 'izzatan wa dhikran fid-dunya wal-akhirah, wa a'udhu bika min kulli sharrin wa min kulli zakhrafin, wa min kulli shay'in yashghaluni 'an dhikrika, wa 'an salatil-layl, wa 'an kulli khayrin.

Virtues & Benefits
This dua is incredibly rich in its requests: 1. **Seeking the Best of Time:** It asks for the best of the current night and the day that will dawn, encompassing all blessings for your time. 2. **Seeking Divine Protection:** It explicitly seeks refuge from the evils of the night and the subsequent day, covering potential harms and misguidance. 3. **Seeking Honour and Remembrance:** The request for 'izzah' (dignity/honour) and 'dhikr' (remembrance) in both worlds is profound, asking for a life that is both respected and constantly mindful of Allah. 4. **Seeking Protection from Distractions:** It guards against anything that would pull us away from our Deen, from remembering Allah, and from performing optional night prayers, which are highly virtuous. 5. **Seeking 'Nur' (Light):** The repeated and detailed requests for light in the heart, sight, hearing, tongue, intellect, religion, body, grave, upon the Sirat, and in Jannah are a testament to the Muslim's desire for divine guidance, clarity, knowledge, and a luminous presence in this life and the next. 6. **Seeking a Good End:** The final supplication for dying and living as a Muslim, and being joined with the righteous without disgrace or trial, is the ultimate goal for every believer.

The narrator, Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught me a comprehensive supplication in which he included seeking good in this world and the Hereafter. He would teach us the supplication whenever we woke up from sleep, and whenever we mentioned it to him, he would teach us the most comprehensive of supplications. He would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihi al-laylah, wa khayra ma ba'daha, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihi al-laylah, wa sharri ma ba'daha. Allahumma inni as'aluka 'izzatan wa dhikran fid-dunya wal-akhirah, wa a'udhu bika min kulli sharrin wa min kulli zakhrafin, wa min kulli shay'in yashghaluni 'an dhikrika, wa 'an salatil-layl, wa 'an kulli khayrin. (Sunan Ibn Majah, Book of Supplication, Hadith 3871)
