Du'a for Fulfilling Evening Promises and Commitments

Evening Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 503

O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and for the deeds which will bring me to Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, my family, and than cold water.

Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wal 'amalalladhi yuballighuni hubbaka. Allahumma'jal hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi wa ahli wa minal ma'il barid.

When to Read

This supplication is particularly relevant as the evening approaches. After the day's responsibilities wind down, and before settling into rest, it’s a perfect time to reflect. We ask Allah to help us align our actions with His love, which naturally extends to fulfilling our commitments and promises made during the day or for the upcoming night. It’s a beautiful way to end the active part of your day, ensuring your heart is oriented towards what truly matters before sleep.

How to Read

Recite this du'a with sincerity and focus. Imagine Allah listening to your heartfelt plea. The act of asking for His love is powerful, and when that love becomes paramount, fulfilling promises becomes a natural extension of wanting to please Him. It’s about more than just obligation; it’s about a transformed heart that finds joy in obedience. Say it with a clear intention to act upon what you ask for.

Virtues & Benefits

This du'a, while not directly about *fulfilling* promises in the mechanical sense, powerfully addresses the root: the love of Allah. When Allah's love is dearest to us, we are naturally motivated to please Him in all aspects of our lives, including honouring our word and commitments. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if small. By seeking Allah's love, we foster a state where fulfilling our duties becomes a source of spiritual closeness, not a burden. It cultivates a heart that is driven by love rather than just obligation.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to teach them this supplication in Ramadan as he taught them the Qur'an. He said: 'Say: Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wal 'amalalladhi yuballighuni hubbaka. Allahumma'jal hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi wa ahli wa minal ma'il barid.' (O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and for the deeds which will bring me to Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, my family, and than cold water.)'
