When to Read

This dua is recited specifically upon entering the Masjid, a sacred space dedicated to the worship of Allah. It's a moment to transition from the outside world into a state of reverence and focus, seeking Allah's blessings and guidance as you prepare for prayer or remembrance.

How to Read

Upon approaching the entrance of the Masjid, one should ideally recite this dua. It is often accompanied by reciting the dua for entering any place, and specifically by placing the right foot forward. The intention is to seek Allah's boundless mercy as you step into His house of worship, setting a tone of humility and earnest supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon entering the Masjid signifies a sincere desire for Allah's mercy, which is the key to all good in this life and the next. It's a beautiful reminder that even in seeking His house, we are dependent on His grace. While this specific wording focuses on opening the 'doors of mercy,' the act of entering the Masjid itself carries immense rewards, including the granting of a higher status, atonement for sins, and the reward of performing prayer.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Humayd as-Sa'idi that when the Prophet ﷺ was asked about the Sunnah of entering the Masjid, he said: 'When one of you enters the Masjid, let him say: Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik.' (O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.) And when he leaves, let him say: Allahumma aftah li abwaba fadlik. (O Allah, open for me the doors of Your bounty.)
