اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited upon entering any masjid. It's particularly poignant when you're facing difficulties or seeking clarity. The act of stepping into the House of Allah is an intentional turning towards His mercy, and this dua acknowledges that we need His guidance and grace, especially when the path ahead seems unclear or challenging.

How to Read

As you approach the entrance of the masjid, pause for a moment. Enter with your right foot first, as is the general etiquette for entering blessed places. Then, recite this dua with sincerity and reflection, picturing Allah's mercy enveloping you as you step inside.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua connects the physical act of entering the masjid with a spiritual aspiration. By asking Allah to open the doors of His mercy, we are acknowledging our dependence on Him for all good, especially in times of trial. It signifies seeking not just solace but also divine assistance and guidance within the sacred space of the mosque. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this, showing that even the simple act of going to pray can be an opportunity for seeking Allah's boundless grace.

An Numan ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Verily, the easiest of my nation will be those whose hearts are like those of the birds." Another narration: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you performs ablution in the best way and intends to go to the mosque, he does not take a step, but for which his rank is raised by one degree, and from which one of his sins is expiated... and when he enters the mosque, he is in a state of worship as long as he is detained in the mosque, and the angels say: 'O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him.' He is in a state of worship as long as he waits for the prayer.' (Sahih Muslim 713, this narration provides broader context about the virtues of going to the masjid. The specific dua itself is linked to the general practice of seeking mercy upon entering).
