Dua for Entering the Masjid: Seeking the Reward of Umrah for Every Step

Entering Masjid
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 713

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.

Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik

When to Read

This dua is recited upon entering the masjid, typically after reciting the dua for entering any building or a general opening dua. It signifies our intention to seek Allah's immense mercy upon stepping into His house.

How to Read

Recite this dua clearly as you step across the threshold of the masjid. It's customary to enter with the right foot first, just as we do when entering our homes, with the intention of seeking blessings and divine favor.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific dua focuses on opening the gates of mercy, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us about the immense reward associated with going to the masjid. One powerful hadith states that for every step taken towards the masjid, one is raised a degree and one sin is forgiven. This implies that even the act of walking to the masjid is a source of great reward, akin to the spiritual journey of Umrah. Allah Almighty says in the Quran: 'Indeed, those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah and [from] the Masjid al-Haram, which We made equal [in capacity] for all people – [for the resident and the visitor] – and whoever intends [within it] by deviation [in religion] or wrongdoing - We will make him taste of a painful punishment.' (Al-Hajj 22:25). This verse underscores the sanctity of the Masjid and the blessings associated with frequenting it.

Source & Authentication

Abu Usayd Malik bin Rab'iah As-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: 'When one of you enters the mosque, he should say: 'O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.' And when he leaves, he should say: 'O Allah, I ask You for Your bounty.'
