Dua for Entering the Masjid: Seeking Allah's Guidance for a Difficult Decision

Entering Masjid
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 713

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.

Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik

When to Read

Recite this beautiful dua immediately upon entering the masjid, after stepping in with your right foot. Imagine you are leaving the worries of the world behind and stepping into Allah's sanctuary. This is the moment to humbly ask Allah to open the gates of His mercy for you, preparing your heart for worship. It’s also a powerful start if you've come to the masjid specifically to seek clarity and guidance from Allah for a difficult decision through prayer like Istikhara, as you are first invoking His vast mercy.

How to Read

As you approach the masjid, make sure your intention is pure, seeking Allah's pleasure. Step in with your right foot first, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Before reciting the specific dua for mercy, it is recommended to send salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ, saying 'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa sallim' (O Allah, send blessings and peace upon Muhammad). Immediately after, recite the dua: 'Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik.' Do so with presence of heart, internalizing the profound request you are making to your Lord.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit of reciting this dua is to invoke Allah's immense **mercy** upon yourself. When you step into His house, asking for His mercy sets the tone for all your worship within. It prepares your heart and mind, cleansing them of worldly distractions. By seeking Allah's mercy, you are also opening yourself up to His **guidance**, His wisdom, and His help. For those who come to the masjid burdened with difficult decisions, this opening plea for mercy is a crucial first step, inviting divine intervention and clarity into their hearts as they engage in further acts of worship, knowing that true guidance only comes from the All-Merciful. It’s a moment of spiritual recalibration, reminding us that every good thing flows from His endless Rahmah.

(O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.) And when he leaves, he should say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlika.' (O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.)"
