اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.
Allahumma-ftah li abwaba rahmatik
When to Read
This beautiful dua is recited as you are about to step into the masjid, or upon entering. Imagine yourself standing at the threshold, the call to prayer may have just finished, or you're arriving for a specific prayer or seeking quiet reflection. It's a moment to transition your heart and mind from the outside world to the sacred space of Allah's house.
How to Read
As you approach the entrance of the masjid, pause for a moment. With sincerity and a hopeful heart, recite this dua. It's often recommended to enter with your right foot first, just as you would enter your home, but the primary focus is the intention and the words spoken. Speak it gently, allowing the meaning to sink in.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a direct supplication to Allah (Exalted is He) for His mercy, the very essence of what we seek when we enter His house to worship Him. It acknowledges that our worship, prayers, and good deeds are only accepted through His grace. By asking for the doors of mercy to be opened, we are essentially asking for our presence in the masjid to be blessed, our worship to be accepted, and our sins to be forgiven. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific phrasing, highlighting the importance of seeking Allah's boundless mercy as we embark on our acts of worship within the masjid.
Source & Authentication
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ entered the mosque, he would say: 'Allahumma-ftah li abwaba rahmatik' (O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy). And when he left it, he would say: 'Allahumma-inni as'aluka min fadlik' (O Allah, I ask of You from Your bounty).
