اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.
Allahumma-ftah li abwaba rahmatik
When to Read
This supplication is recited upon entering any mosque. While the standard dua for entering a mosque is 'Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik' (O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy) and when exiting, 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik' (O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty), the general etiquette of entering the mosque applies even when attending a funeral prayer. The primary focus when entering for a janazah is to offer the prayer with sincere intention and to be present for the deceased and their family.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity as you place your right foot inside the mosque. It's an act of seeking Allah's blessings and guidance as you enter His house. Imagine yourself seeking not just physical entry, but a spiritual connection and the acceptance of your prayer.
Virtues & Benefits
Entering the mosque with this dua is a Sunnah that invites Allah's mercy. It reminds us that the mosque is a place where blessings descend. When attending a funeral prayer, this intent is amplified, as we are also seeking Allah's mercy for the deceased and strength for their loved ones. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the importance of etiquette in the house of Allah, and this dua is a beautiful expression of that.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: When one of you enters the mosque, he should invoke Allah (saying 'Bismillah, wa-s-salatu wa-s-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik.') When he leaves, he should invoke Allah (saying 'Bismillah, wa-s-salatu wa-s-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.')
