اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from all evil jinn (male and female).
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith
When to Read
This dua is recited just before entering the bathroom or toilet area. It is a specific supplication for a place often associated with impurities and the presence of unseen beings, including shayatin (devils).
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention of seeking Allah's protection as you are about to enter a place where one is physically exposed and spiritually vulnerable. It is customary to enter with the left foot after reciting this dua, and to exit with the right foot after reciting the dua for coming out.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful shield against the malevolent influences that may reside in such places. The 'khubuth' refers to male devils and 'khaba'ith' to female devils, signifying all forms of evil from the jinn. By seeking refuge in Allah, we are invoking His ultimate protection, which extends to guarding our hearts and minds from negative whispers and temptations (nafs) that can be exacerbated in a place of solitude. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this supplication as a profound way to maintain spiritual awareness and purity even in our most private moments, reminding us that Allah is our protector everywhere.
Source & Authentication
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "When any one of you wants to enter the privy, he should say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306, Sahih Muslim 375). The privy refers to the place of relieving oneself, commonly known as the bathroom or toilet.
