بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils (or from evil and wickedness).
Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.
When to Read
Recited just before entering the bathroom or toilet area. It's a Sunnah practice recommended before fulfilling the need for nature's call.
How to Read
Recite this dua before stepping into the bathroom with your left foot first. Upon exiting, it is recommended to recite the dua for leaving the bathroom: 'Ghufranak' (Seeking Your forgiveness).
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful act of seeking Allah's protection. The bathroom is a place where impurities reside, and it is also considered a place where Shaytan (Satan) is often present. By reciting this dua, we invoke Allah's name and seek His refuge from any evil, malevolent spirits, or temptations that might be associated with such a place. It's a reminder of Allah's omnipresence and our reliance on Him even in the most private moments, safeguarding us from spiritual and perhaps even physical harm.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When any one of you wants to enter the privy, he should say: Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306). The word 'khubuth' can refer to male devils and 'khaba'ith' to female devils, or it can mean evil and wicked things in general.
