Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Seeking Protection and Purity

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 142 (Bukhari), 375 (Muslim)

بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils (or from evil and wicked things).

Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

When to Read

This dua is recited *before* entering the bathroom or toilet area. It's a practice that reminds us of Allah's presence even in a place of privacy, helping us maintain a sense of reverence and modesty.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincerity upon approaching the entrance of the bathroom. It's best said quietly before stepping in, preferably with the left foot entering first, as this is the Sunnah for entering a place considered unclean.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is more than just a ritual; it's a powerful spiritual shield. By seeking refuge in Allah from the 'khubuth' (evil spirits, devils) and 'khaba'ith' (wicked things, impure substances), we are asking for protection from unseen harms and temptations that might be present. It purifies our intention for entering this private space and reminds us of the importance of maintaining our dignity and avoiding any impropriety, thus fostering modesty and respect even in solitude.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When any one of you wants to enter the privy, he should say: Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 142, Sahih Muslim 375). The narration in Muslim also mentions that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would cover himself while using the toilet, and when he emerged, he would say: 'Ghufranak' (I seek Your forgiveness) - Sahih Muslim 371.
