Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Seeking Allah's Protection from Evils

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from [all] evil jinn, both male and female.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith

When to Read

This dua is recited specifically before entering the toilet or bathroom, a place where Shaytan and impure spirits are known to reside. It's a profound acknowledgment of our need for Allah's protection even in the most private and seemingly mundane moments.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity just before stepping into the bathroom. It's a quiet supplication, a direct plea to Allah. While some scholars mention entering with the left foot after reciting this, the primary emphasis is the dua itself, an act of seeking divine refuge.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, we are actively seeking Allah's protection from the harmful whispers and influences of Shaytan and evil jinn, who are known to frequent such places. It's a way of sanctifying our actions and seeking Allah's shield, acknowledging His dominion over all realms, seen and unseen. This practice reminds us that even in isolation, we are never truly alone but always in the presence of Allah, seeking His safeguarding.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When any one of you enters the toilet, he should say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from [all] evil jinn, both male and female.) Sahih al-Bukhari 6306. Another narration adds: 'The jinn of the earth are the evil ones.' (Referenced in some commentaries as found in Sunan Abi Dawud 10, but attributed to a different chain/wording by some scholars when discussing the bathroom dua itself). The hadith in Bukhari is the primary reference for this specific dua. The context is that the bathroom is a place where one may be exposed, and it is a known haunt for jinn. Therefore, seeking Allah's refuge before entering is a measure of protection.
